Monodentate and Bidentate Ligands

In homework problem 9C.5, (CO3)2- is revealed to be both monodentate and bidentate. Can someone explain how this is possible? Also, are there any other ligands that fall under this category we need to know?

It depends on the cation size.

Some ligands are large enough to bind the same (smaller) cation in two places, but unable to bind larger cations in two places.

This type of detail would be covered in specialized inorganic chemistry classes.

In class I covered ligands that are clearly polydentate: ethylenediamine, diethylenetriamine, EDTA, etc.
