polydentate

Postby Sarah Blake-2I » Sun Dec 01, 2019 4:41 pm

What is a polydentate? Does it have to do with ligands and the naming of them? I just need some clarification as I am a bit confused with this unit and topic. Thanks!

Polydentate refers to ligands binding the transition metal at multiple sites. It does not have to do with the naming of the ligands but the number of binding sites the ligands have.

When a ligand is polydentate, it can bind to more than one binding site simultaneously. For example, ethylenediamine, NH2CH2CH2NH2, has a nitrogen with a lone pair of electrons on each end. It can therefore bind to two sites on the central metal atom. Ethylenediamine is bidentate. The term polydentate therefore refers to the structure of the ligand itself.

Polydentates are ligands that bind to the transition metal at several sites. It refers to the ligand's amount of binding sites
