Is the coordination number just the number of bonds on the central atom?

Yes, I believe that the coordination number is the number of points at which a ligand is attached to a central atom.

yes so you would count the number of bonds to figure out the coordination number of the central atom

The coordination number of a central atom on a molecule refers to the number of bonds on it.
