Do we need to know the formation constant?

Postby Areena H 2K » Tue Dec 03, 2019 9:08 pm

The book mentions the formation constant Kf for finding equilibrium for coordination compounds. Do we need to know how to set this up the same way as the acids and bases Ka constant with products over reactant?

It would be helpful to understand the general concept. The equilibrium constant is set up mainly to show what the reaction favors and what the complex's ligands are most likely to be. When analyzing reactions involving the equilibrium constant, it is generally a formation of the products over the reactants and therefore a high value for Kf would result in the reaction being favorable
