How do you know whether a ligand is a chelate or not?

A ligand chelates when when it forms a ring including the central atom. It must be polydentate.

Not all ring structures chelate though, make sure that the electron pairs are close together, otherwise they will only remain polydentate and will not chelate.

As I understand it,if a complex has the central metal atom as a part of a ring, it is a chelate.
