Coordination Number and Regions of density

Postby Jenaye Brelland 2I » Sun Nov 29, 2020 12:12 am

I was wondering if coordination numbers could be connected to the number of regions of density, since they are the number of bonding. When I was watching the lecture about how to find coordination number, I kept thinking about regions of density.

I don't think there's a connection, but I'm not too familiar with the coordination numbers,

Based on how it was described in the lecture, I think coordination number has to do with the number of bonds instead of general regions of electron density, and does not include lone pairs.

In Lavelle's last lecture (11/26/20), he said that the number of bonds was equal to the coordination number.

So its just two separate ideas or topics that both relate to the number of bonds but not to each other?

I'm also a bit confused on the differentiation, can anyone clarify?

Coordination numbers refer to the number of bonds between the central metal and ligands. Regions of density could include lone pairs of electrons which does not pertain to coordination numbers.

Coordination numbers are numbers of bounds the central metal formed in a coordination compound; regions of electron density is different, it is used while determining the molecule shape therefore electron lone pairs also count as regions of density.

The coordinatiom number describes the number of bonds the central atom formed so it does not necessarily look at electrons. Also, in regions of density lone electron pairs are considered regions of density and this has no correlation with the coordination number.
