Tetrahedral vs Square Planar Coordinate Complex
Basically as the title states: How do we identify when the compound is structured as a tetrahedral or a square planar? I can identify when it is an octahedral or either a square planar or tetrahedral, but I am having a trouble in distinguishing when the structure is a tetrahedral or a square planar. Am I missing something?

Re: Tetrahedral vs Square Planar Coordinate Complex
Hi!
Dr. Lavelle said for 14A we don't have to distinguish between square planar versus tetrahedral for coordinate complexes. As long as you can determine it has 4 coordinate covalent bonds, then you can say the structure will be tetrahedral or square planar.
Hope this helps!

Re: Tetrahedral vs Square Planar Coordinate Complex
For this class, you do not need to distinguish between tetrahedral and square planar. Just know that they are the common shape for coordination number 4.
Re: Tetrahedral vs Square Planar Coordinate Complex
I believe that you don't have to differentiate how a molecule is tetrahedral and square planar because I think Dr. Lavelle has sad so. All you need to understand is they own a coordination number of 4.

We do not need to know how to identify. The only thing that we must remember is the amount of bonds that are formed.

I don't believe we have to differentiate between the two for 14A.

I believe we do not have to distinguish them in 14A.

Re: Tetrahedral vs Square Planar Coordinate Complex
I don't think Dr. Lavelle expects us to differentiate for 14A, just that there are 4 coordinate covalent bonds in both.
