Prefixes

Does anyone have any tips for memorizing prefixes? Like do we need to know all of the prefixes?

I'd say there are a few you definitely need to know: di, tri, tetra, penta, hexa, because these are the common number of ligands we'll get in our questions and the extra ones (bis, tris, tetrakis, pentakis, hexakis) are just built on top of that.

If you are talking about prefixes as in the nomenclature of ligands, I say just memorize everything the textbook says is a common ligand

I think memorizing the basic ligand names on the ligand chart would greatly help in the final exam. Also, it would be nice to memorize the prefix for numbers up to 10 (like mono, di, tri, tetra, penta, hexa, hepta, octa, nona, deca)!

Where can we access the ligand chart?

There is a chart on our Sapling textbook: https://sites.google.com/site/chempendix/ligands

Also, there is a "Naming coordination compounds" chart on Dr. Lavelle's chem 14a website!

I memorized them by making flashcards with the ligand names and the prefixes.

I would definitely recommend following the ligand charts!

I would think that di, tri, tetra, penta, hexa, bis, tris, tetrakis, pentakis and hexakis are the only ones that we would need to have memorized!

The ligand charts definitely helped me, since I was able to see which prefixes correlated with which number of ligands.

Studying the ligand chart could be helpful.
