My notes seem to contradict each other so I would like some clarification.
Does the number of ligands or the number of bonds determine the shape of a complex?
Thanks in advance.

Re: determining shape of complex
I would assume the number of ligands would equal the number of bonds to the transition metal, but to be safe, use the number of bonds to determine the shape.

Re: determining shape of complex
The number of bonds that are bonded to the central atom determine the shape of the complex.

Re: determining shape of complex
You look at the number of bonds to determine the shape of the complex!
