Denticity

Postby Joey_Okumura_1E » Sat Dec 12, 2020 5:55 pm

Please confirm: The denticity of a molecule refers to the amount of bonds a ligand can form with a single central atom. Oxalate has four oxygen atoms with lone pairs and therefore has four binding points. However, due to its geometry, it can only form two bonds with a single central atom. Therefore, oxalate is bidentate and not tetradentate.

Yes this is correct, because denticity depends on number of physically possible bonds.
