polydentate ligands
will we need to know specific polydentate ligands such as "en," "edta," or oxalato for the final?

I would assume that we would not need to be familiar with the complex terminology. But I would recommend becoming familiar with the prefixes for the molecules that possess multiple ligands, as well as knowing what the term "dentate" refers to. If I am not mistaken, the term is used to denote the number of ligands (or molecules that must have one or more lone pairs of electrons) that are bonded to it.

I believe we will at least need to know the ligands listed in the hyperlinked worksheet on Dr. Lavelle's Chem 14A website called "Naming Coordination Compounds", which include the names of the ligands you listed as examples. I believe for any other ligands not listed, we will at least be given a lewis structure in order to determine how many lone pairs can be donated to the same central atom with the coordination compound. I would also like to slightly correct what 705383815 said about the term "dentate." The term refers to the number of sites a ligand can bind to for one central atom within a coordination compound and not the number of ligands that are bonded to a central atom. For example, en, C2H4(NH2)2, is bidentate because it has two lone pairs through two different nitrogens that can offer themselves up to form a bond at two different sites on a central atom in a coordination compound.

I agree, I think just make sure you are familiar with the sheet from the website and know what the prefixes mean. I assume that the examples of terms you used in your question will be defined on the final if they are included since that is not emphasized on the outline/in lectures.
