Polydentate Using Lewis Structures

Are Lewis structures necessary in determining whether or not a ligand is polydentate? Also, what is the reasoning behind the idea of lone pairs and shape when it comes to whether a ligand is bidentate, tridentate, etc?

I think its just helpful to know the Lewis structure because to figure out the binding of the ligand to the central atom, you need to know how many lone pairs and bond pairs it has to be available for binding. When a ligand is bidentate, it means that they have two donor atoms which allow them to bind to a central metal atom or ion at two points. For example, ethylenediamine (en) is a bidentate ligand because the lone pair on the two Nitrogen atoms allow it to bind with the central atom and same with edta, being hexadentate ligand.
