Ligand Binding Sites

What is the easiest way to determine how many binding sites a ligand has? What are the main differences between monodentates, bidentates, etc. ?

Ligands act as Lewis bases, or electron pair donors, and therefore have at least one donor atom with an electron pair used to form covalent bonds with the central atom. The term monodentate can be translated to "one tooth" meaning that a monodentate ligand has only one donor atom used to bond to the central metal atom. Bidentate ligands have two donor atoms which allow them to bind at two points. In general, you can look at the number of atoms with lone pair electrons because these electron pairs can be used to bond to a central metal atom.
