Determining Shape

I know that most coordination compounds are either square planar, tetrahedral, or octahedral. I don't think we went too much over why since that goes into crystal field theory. The ligand is polydentate, and I think it forms an octahedral coordination complex. Can anyone explain the reasoning behind this?

The most common geometry for coordination is octahedral. In this case there can be up to 6 bonds. Since each (en) makes 2 bonds, if you have three of them then all 6 bonds will be made (= octahedral)
