Ligands and their Characteristics

Postby 704578485 » Mon Nov 16, 2015 7:56 pm

For Quiz #3, what is the method/process when given the molecular formula of a ligand in determining whether it is mono or polydentate and if polydentate how many possible bonds it can make with the transition metal?

There should be a list in your book that says which are the polydentate ligands. Because you don't need to know the structures of all the ligands, it's probably best to study that way. In general though, the most common polydentate ligands have nitrogens with an extra lone pair that can form a bond.
