Why does Cl- have an oxidation number of -1?

Cl has an oxidation number of -1 because it gains one electron to complete its octet when becoming an ion or bonding with another ion.

The oxidation number is the charge of an atom when it is bonded in a molecule. I am not quite sure what example you are pulling this out of, but my guess is that since Cl has a charge of -1, that is its oxidation number. Hope this helps!

Cl has 7 electrons and needs to gain one more to have an octet

Cl has an oxidation number of -1 because Cl has 7 valence electrons and needs to gain one more electron with a charge of -1 to have a full valence shell.

The oxidation number of Cl is -1 because it requires one more electron in order to complete it's octet!! The pattern then goes on when moving to the left of the periodic table!

Chlorine needs one more electron to become the Cl- anion, so this is where that oxidation number comes from.

Chlorine only needs one electron to gain a full octet. Therefore, it has an oxidation number of -1 because it will has a -1 charge in its ionic form.

Cl has 7 electrons. It needs one more electron to complete that octet, explaining its oxidation number that corresponds to it.

The oxidation number represents the number of electrons gained or lost to have a full valence shell. Chlorine has 7 electrons, so it only needs to gain one electron (-1 oxidation number) to satisfy the octet rule.

Cl has a -1 charge because it needs 1 more electron it complete its octet.
