How do you determine the oxidation state of the metal species in the complex [Co(NH3)4Cl2]Cl?

The overall charge of the coordination sphere is +1, since Cl has a charge of -1. NH3 is 0, so we do not need to count that. Cl2 is -2 because Cl has a charge of 1, so now you would have to solve for the equation x + -2 = +1. x would be +3. Hope this helps!

Like Barbara said, since Cl has a charge of -1, we know that the coordination compound inside the brackets must have a charge of +1. Cl2 inside the brackets will give a -2 charge, and (NH3)4 is a neutral molecule so it will have a charge of 0, so therefore Co must have a charge of +3 in order for the whole compound Co(NH3)4Cl2 to have a charge of +1.
