Ligands and Lewis Bases

Can someone please explain how ligands act as Lewis bases?

A compound that donates its electrons is considered a lewis base. Ligands act as lewis bases because they donate their electron pair to the central atom.

Also, ligands must always have at least one lone pair and because of that it can donate those electrons
