Ligand bonding 9C.5

Postby Sophia B 3G » Sat Nov 27, 2021 1:28 pm

What is needed for a ligand to bond? When trying to solve 9C.5, I keep getting stuck not knowing what I should be looking for to see if the ligand is polydentate.

It must be acting as a lewis base meaning that it can donate a pair of nonbonding electrons

A ligand essentially needs to have electron base pairs to donate in order to bind with a central atom, thus creating a coordination complex. To determine if a ligand is polydentate, which is a ligand capable of attaching itself to multiple (more than 2) bonding sites, you must look for multiple donor atoms in the ligand. I hope this helps!

The ligand must have a pair of nonbonding electrons to donate, meaning it acts as a lewis base.
