Coordination number 6

Can the shape only be an octahedral if the coordination number is 6?

in the universe/in nature no I think other geometries are possible, but it is by far the most common geometry so as far as I know/for the purposes of our class, when the coordination number is 6 the shape is octahedral :)

In lecture the reason was to keep it simple, so octahedral would be the coordination number of 6. We would probably have to go into too much detail to learn the other shapes.

I believe other geometries are possible, as long as it is a geometry with 6 atoms attached to the central atom, however, the octahedral geometry is the most common.

Trigonal prismatic also has a coordination number of 6 (I don't know if we would have to know that for 14A this year), so there can be others with a coordination number of 6.

I don't believe it's the only shape if the coordination number is 6, however, it's the most common and octahedral is the only one that Lavelle taught us, so I would default to that.

Furthermore, to add to the discussion, with a coordination number of 6, the only shape covered would be octahedral. However, a coordination number of 4 may correspond to a tetrahedral or square planar shape.
