What are ligands

Postby Irene Kang 3F » Sat Nov 27, 2021 11:07 pm

Are ligands supposed to be anything that is bonded to a transition metal cation?(because he said ligands will not have a positive charge since the transition metal is a cation or has a positive charge)
If there is an atom with a lone pair but it is not bonded to a tm cation, is it not considered a ligand?

A ligand must be bounded to the central atom or ion in a complex of a d-metal.

Technically, ligands are any ion or neutral molecule that bonds to a central atom and acts as a lewis base—giving electrons to the central atom. So yes, if it is bonded to a central positive atom then it would be considered a ligand. However, if it just has a lone pair and is not bonded to a central atom it would not be considered a ligand at that point. Although under different circumstances it could act as one, it is not in that case.

Hello!
Ligands have to do with coordination compounds, which are molecules or ions that are bonded to transition metals of the d block (the central atom). And I think ligands are mostly negatively or have a neutrally charged since transition metals tend to have a neutral or positive oxidation state.

Ligands can either be ions or molecules which are attached to the central atom (which are TM cations as you mentioned!) of the coordination complex. However, I believe that the lone pairs in ligands must be bonded to the central atom, forming a covalent bond, so if the lone pair is not bonded, then it wouldn't be a ligand.

Hi! Ligands are ions or molecules that are bonded to a metal ion to form a coordinate complex. Based on this definition, if an atom had only a lone pair and was not bonded to a TM cation, then it would not be considered a ligand as it can only be considered a ligand if it were bonded to a metal ion. Hope this helps!

Ligands are lewis bases attached to a central metal atom or ion.

Ligands are any atoms or ions that give an electron to a central atom that is a transition metal.

Hello, ligands are molecules and ion that are attached to a central metal atom. They have to be bonded to the central atom to be called a ligand, so an unbonded lone pair would not be a ligand.

A ligand is a molecule, usually a Lewis base that is attached to a central metal atom.

Ligands are ions/molecules attached to the central atom. The lone pairs must be bonded to the central atom, forming a covalent bond.

A ligand is an ion or molecule, which donates a pair of electrons to the central metal atom or ion to form a coordination complex. It is usually a lewis base.
