Polydentate and its relationship to Chelates

Postby Alex_Lee_1K » Sun Nov 28, 2021 6:49 pm

Hello,

Under the definition of a Chelate which is that it contains at least 1 polydentate ligand and forms a ring of atoms around the central ion, does that mean that all polydentate ligans have the possibility to become chelates?

thanks

No, which is shown in problem 9C.7. The ligands need to be close enough to bond so they can form a ring with the same metal center for it to be a chelation complex. for 9C.7, a) and c) can't be chelation complexes, while b) can.
