Coordination Compound vs. Chelate vs. Complex Ion

Postby Teresa Dinh 3L » Sun Nov 28, 2021 6:59 pm

I'm confused on the similarities and difference between a coordination compound, chelate, and complex ion.

Is a chelate a type of coordination compound?

A complex ion is a molecule with an overall charge that consists of a central metal atom/ion to which a number of ligands are attached by coordinate covalent bonds. The chemical formula of a complex ion is enclosed within square brackets []. A coordination compound is a neutral, ionic compound in which at least one of the ions present is a complex ion. A chelate is a complex containing at least 1 polydentate ligand (a ligand that can bind at more than 1 place to the central metal atom/ion) that forms a ring of atoms.
