Ligand Definition

How exactly would you define a ligand, and what constitutes one? Are ligands always made of polyatomic ions? Or is that just a possibility

In this class, ligands are molecules that donate a lone pair of electrons to a transition metal through a coordinate covalent bond. Also ligands don't always have to be polyatomic ions, but they are frequently polyatomic ions.

I like to simplify it and just remember a ligand as an atom or polyatomic ion attached to the central metal atom by coordinate covalent bonds.

A ligand is just a molecule or ion that binds via coordinate covalent bonds to a central metal species. Ligands do not always have to be polyatomic ions as they just need to be able to have a coordinate covalent bond with the central metal species, an example would be Br- which is seen on the week 9 problem 6 achieve homework.

Molecules that donate a lone pair of electrons to a transition metal via coordinate covalent bond are also known as ligands and are thus usually polyatomic ions.

A ligand is an atom or ion that is bonded to the central atom, it is also an electron donor so it has at least one lone pair.

A ligand is an ion or molecule, which donates a pair of electrons to the central metal atom or ion to form a coordination complex, hope that helps

Do coordinate covalent bonds only happen in the bonding of metal ions to ligand?

Ligands are an ion or molecule that is attached to a metal atom by coordinate bonding, and gives off a pair of electrons to the central metal ion

A ligand is any atom or molecule attached to a central atom, usually a metallic element.

Ligands are defined as the electron donating species directly attached to the central ion to make up the coordination sphere.

Ligands are atoms or molecules that bond to a central metal ion atom through a coordinate bond. A coordinate bond is produced as the ligand shares 2 of its electrons to the metal ion instead of ligand sharing one and the metal sharing 1. A ligand does not have to be polyatomic, but it commonly is.

A ligand is a ion or molecule that donates electrons through a coordinate covalent bond to a central metal cation.

A ligand is a neutral molecule or charged ion that acts as lewis base by donating a lone pair of electrons that can be used to form a bond to a metal ion. Yes, polyatomic ions could be ligands because they fit this definition.

Hi!
For this class, you should define ligand as an atom or poly atomic ion, which it doesn’t have to be but often is, which donates a pair of electrons to a transition metal through a coordinate covalent bond.
Hope this helps!

Do coordinate covalent bonds only happen in the bonding of metal ions to ligand?

Hi Aida!
I believe a ligand can form a coordinate compound only with a transition metal because of the possibility of an expanded octet.
Hope this helps!
