Oxidation State

Postby Natalie Gibson 1c » Mon Nov 29, 2021 11:22 pm

When looking at coordination compounds, particularly the oxidation states, do elements/molecules outside of the coordinate sphere affect the oxidation state?

Atoms outside the coordination sphere will affect the oxidation state. A method to finding the oxidation state would be to first find the overall oxidation state of the coordination sphere in relation to the atoms outside of the sphere if there are atoms outside the sphere. Then, once you know the overall oxidation state of the coordination sphere, you can use that to solve for the individual oxidation states of atoms within the coordination sphere.

Yes, elements outside the coordination sphere do play a factor in determining the transition metal's oxidation state. Using the commonly known charges on the other ligands within and outside the coordination sphere will aid in solving for the oxidation state of the transition metal. Hope this helps!

Hi! Yes, when looking at coordination compounds, molecules outside of the coordinate sphere do affect the oxidation state. You have to account for any atoms or molecules outside of the brackets as well when adding the charges.
