Polydenate Ligands/Denticity

Postby Aliza Hacking 1A » Wed Dec 01, 2021 3:13 pm

Hi! Does anyone have a semi-cohesive strategy that works for them in terms of determining the denticity of different compounds/ligands? I don't really know the best way to approach those problems. Thank you!!

A strategy that works for me is to draw out / imagine the lewis structure, and see which atoms have lone pairs. If two or more atoms have lone pairs, and they are two or more atoms apart from each other (spacers), then the compound will be polydentate.
