Naming coordination compounds

Postby annemarielawrence » Fri Dec 03, 2021 8:13 pm

When naming coordination compounds, how do we know when to end the ion's name with -ide or an o? Like for Chloride in [CO(NH3)5Cl]?

Anions within the coordination sphere/brackets get the o at the end. If it's outside the brackets, it's just the anion name.

The rules for naming elements like chlorine differs depending on whether an atom is in the coordination sphere or not. For example, for chlorine inside the coordination sphere, the ine- is replaced with o- and outside, the -ine is replaced with -ide.

You look at where the element is in relation to the brackets. In brackets=remove ending and add O, out of brackets=remove ending add -ide
