Bidentate Ligands

Postby BB Dis 1H » Sat Dec 04, 2021 2:48 pm

Can someone explain what bidentate ligands are and what their importance is? I know that the definition on the achieve homework says its a ligand that can form two bonds to a metal ion, but I am still confused on it.

As you have stated, a bidentate ligand is a ligand that can form two bonds with a metal ion in a coordination compound. This means that this one ligand is bonding to the central ion twice. Thus, for any bidentate ligand, the coordination number for this compound increases by two. Additionally, some ligands are tridentate or even more, and tridentate ligands will bond to the metal ion three times, therefore increasing the coordination number by three as one ligand forms three separate bonds.

Perfect thank you so much for explaining!
