Chelate is a complex containing a ligand that forms a ring of atoms that includes the central metal atom. Because these ligands can tightly bind cations, they are able to bind to toxic metal ions to form complex structures. These can then be filtered out of the bloodstream.

How do you know if there is a chelating agent in place?
