Cobalt plays an important role in the molecular structure of vitamin B12. The cobalt ion can bond with groups such as a methyl group or an adenosyl group, forming active forms of vitamin B12. This can be translated to usage in DNA synthesis and methylation reactions as well as involvement in energy metabolism and the breakdown of certain amino acids and fatty acids.
