TM to Biological Function

Postby nyireess » Tue Dec 05, 2023 8:21 pm

On 11/27, Dr. Lavelle went through a list of transitional metals to their biological functions. Is this something we should know for the final?

(list for reference)
chromium, Cr → assists insulin in control of blood sugar
iron, Fe → myoglobin, hemoglobin, e- transfer in the oxidation of carbohydrates, proteins, fats (respiratory chain)
cobalt, Co → vitamin B12
Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn → critical for enzyme function

Hello,

If you reference Outline #5 you will see that there is a bullet point that states: "Describe the biological functions of naturally occurring coordination compounds (e.g., hemoglobin, myoglobin, vitamin B12)" (Lavelle). I dont see anything in outline #6 mentioning needing to know the information you listed in your question so its very likely it is something that will not be tested on during the final.
