Myoglobin and Hemoglobin

Postby morganm » Wed Dec 06, 2023 9:24 pm

Can someone explain what Lavelle was discussing regarding heme complexes, myoglobin, and hemoglobin? I didn't write down great notes for this part.

A myoglobin is a iron bound to a porphyrin ligand, called a heme complex. Which is then bonded to a protein and this constitutes a myoglobin. A hemoglobin is then made up of 4 myoglobins.

Myoglobin and hemoglobin are oxygen binding proteins. Hemoglobin is found in the blood and contains 4 heme groups. Myoglobin is found in muscles and contains only one heme group. Hemoglobin often passes off oxygen to myoglobin in oxygen deficient muscle tissue.
