Myoglobin vs Hemoglobin

Postby haleyervin7 » Thu Nov 29, 2018 10:31 pm

Since myoglobin only has one spot available, which iron binds to, how does it bind to other myoglobins to form hemoglobin?

Hemoglobin is made from four myoglobin-like subunits that come together via their quaternary structure. The way these four proteins come together have no bearing on the heme group, which binds with the oxygen.

To add on, because hemoglobin has 4 myoglobin-like molecules, it therefore has four times the carrying capacity of myoglobin, which is very important for the transport of oxygen in blood.
