Cisplatin

How does Cisplatin help in chemotherapy and why can't transplatin be used?

Cis-platin , cis means that the constituents are on the same side in the structure, in this case there are 2 Cl's on one side. This is effective in chemotherapy because when cisplatin interacts with DNA, Nitrogen from the DNA takes place of Cl causing the DNA to lose its structure and function and stopping replication/uncontrollable growth.

DNA is held by hydrogen bonds. Therefore, for something to bind to it, it must also bind to a polar molecule (bonded by hydrogen bonds). Since cisplatin has its two chlorines on the same side, the dipole doesn't cancel, creating partial negative charges on the chlorines. This allows cisplatin to bind with polar DNA. In contrast, transplatin has chlorine on opposite sides, therefore the dipoles cancel and is not strong enough to bind to DNA.

In order for the interaction to be strong enough, the Cl's must be on the same side and must create a net dipole.

Will cisplatin be apart of what we need to know on the final?

The syllabus says "Discuss well-known examples of coordination compounds used as chemotherapy drugs." so it would be a good idea to know it.

How are we supposed to know the biological impacts of compounds like these?

Cisplatin is used in chemotherapy and can be used to treat cancer.
