Can someone explain how cisplatin stops cell division?

So because it is a cis molecule the two chlorine atoms are on the same side of the cisplatin molecule. As a result, when one chlorine bonds the other can be displaced so the compound can be bound in 2 places which makes the bonds stronger. This blocks DNA replication from occurring so cell division can't take place and ultimately the cell dies. This is why it's kind of dangerous in the sense that it targets both the healthy cells and cancer cells.

This website gives a more simplistic description of cisplatin to help start to understand why the structure of cisplatin helps to kill cancer cells. Hope it helps! ... cisplatin/

Basically cisplatin forms a coordinate compound with the DNA strands by binding its two Chlorine atoms to DNA. Since there are two places that are bounded cisplatin bounds to DNA really tightly. When cell division happens cisplatin blocked the enzyme from going through, therefore stopping DNA replication. If DNA is not replicated then cell division cannot take place. Hope this help!

Cisplatin stops cell division because they have their Cls on the same side of cisplatin. When cisplatin is administered, the Nitrogens along the guanine will displace the Cls on the Cisplatin which causes the bond to be blocked when it is being replicated.
