In the marshmallow problems,it asks what the oxidation state of Fe in the heme complex is. How do we find this? it also asks about the porphryn ligand. What is this? Is it mono or poly dentate? Is this something we need to memorize?

To find which oxidation state the transition metal is in a coordinating compound, you need to sum the charges of the ligands and then subtract the total charge of the compound by the total charge of the ligands.
So like in [Fe(CN6)]4- the charges of the ligands equals -6 and the total charge is -4, so -4 -(-6) is +2, and thats the oxidation state of the Iron inside.

Porphyrin is a ligand and is tetradentate, considering hemoglobin is an example of a porphyrin, you might want to memorize it.
