Cisplatin

Postby Siddiq 1E » Wed Dec 04, 2019 9:27 am

I'm a little bit confused as to how the structure of cisplatin allows it to act as a chemotherapeutic agent.

Unlike trans-diamine-dichloro-platinum, Cisplatin has two Cls on the same side of the molecule that allows the Cls to bind to the same DNA strand to form 2 bonds. This blocks the enzymes used in DNA replication from replicating the DNA strand. Thus, it blocks DNA replication.

Why is ciplatin square planar and not tetrahedral?

Do we have to know that for the test?

I think we do, because he talked about the different structures that coordination compounds can have, like tetrahedral, octahedral, square planar.

Also, it's good to remember how to draw it, just in case. Plus it helps with labelling its molecular shape and usage for chemotherapy.
