What is the difference between a coordination number and oxidation state?

The coordination number refers to the number of coordinate bonds surrounding a cation, while the oxidation number refers to the charge of a transition metal.

The coordination number is basically how many ligands are attached to the central atoms while the oxidation number is the charge of the transition metal.
