are there specific biological compounds that we need to memorize?

Heme complexes, myoglobin, and hemoglobin (and their function) may be important.

I think we could be tested for their functions, so just memorize them to be on the safer side.

You should memorize cisplatin, the heme complex, myoglobin, and hemoglobin, as well as the properties of AT and GC pairs in DNA.
