Hemoglobin vs. Myoglobin
What is the difference in purpose of hemoglobin and myoglobin? Do both transport oxygen but just in different amounts?

Hemoglobin is in the blood while myoglobin is in the tissue! Also, hemoglobin contains four myoglobin like molecules so it can transport much more oxygen.

In lecture, Dr. Lavelle's notes showed that myoglobin transports oxygen in muscle cells, while hemoglobin transports oxygen in blood. So, I think the difference is that they transport oxygen in different places.

Myoglobin is in tissues and muscles, and hemoglobin is in blood, but they're very similar. They're basically different in the heme complex, where hemoglobin has four myoglobins bound together, so hemoglobin can carry more oxygen atoms than myoglobins can.

Hemoglobin is primarily for oxygen transport in the blood and is the main mechanism used in our bodies for oxygen transport because it can hold more oxygen than myoglobin. On the other hand, myoglobin is only used when we are in need a quick bursts of oxygen for example in the tissue while we are working out since it can hold less oxygen than hemoglobin can!

Hemoglobin is blood and myoglobin is muscle tissue. I believe hemoglobin has four myoglobin molecules so it also carries more oxygen.

I remember Dr. Lavelle saying that hemoglobin is made up of four myoglobin-like molecules, so does that mean they detach from hemoglobin to form myoglobin? I'm not sure whether this is the case. If anyone has an idea that would be really helpful, I'm a bit confused as to how myoglobin forms as compared to hemoglobin.

Hi! Myoglobin and hemoglobin both transfer oxygen; however, it was mentioned in the lecture that myoglobin particularly transports oxygen in muscle cells whereas hemoglobin transports oxygen throughout the body/blood stream (as they also pass through the lungs). Hemoglobin has four myoglobin-like molecules which are able to bind up to four oxygen molecules allowing transport of oxygen in the blood. Hope this helps! :)

Hi! Hemoglobin is the transfer of oxygen in the blood and myoglobin is the transfer of oxygen in muscle. Like Dr.Lavelle mentioned there will be more oxygen transported in the blood since hemoglobin is made up of myoglobin.

Hi! Like the others said, Myoglobin and hemoglobin both transfer oxygen. However, myoglobin transports oxygen throughout our muscle cells while hemoglobin transports oxygen throughout our body through our blood stream. Since Hemoglobin is made up of four myoglobin-like molecules, which allows for up to four oxygen molecules to bind which allows it to be transported through our bloodstream. Hemoglobin can transport more oxygen so it is the main tool used to transport oxygen throughout our bodies. Myoglobin works as a quick transportation tool of oxygen when our muscles need it since it holds less oxygen molecules. Hope this helps!

Hemoglobin carries more oxygen as it has 4 myoglobins and transports o2 in the blood. Myoglobin transports through the tissues.

Hemoglobin is a protein that is found in the blood that carries oxygen while myoglobin is found in muscles. This is why blood has a red color and is also why muscle tissue or meat from animal products have a red color. This is due to the natural red color that results from the iron in each protein. Hemoglobin is built up of 4 myoglobin proteins leading to its function in the blood of carrying oxygen.

Myoglobin is basically a monomeric heme protein established in muscle tissue. Hemoglobin is responsible for binding oxygen and transporting it throughout our body.

Hi! Both hemoglobin and myoglobin are protons that carry oxygen. Hemoglobin and myoglobin both carries and transports oxygen. Different than hemoglobin, myoglobin has a higher affinity for oxygen atoms, meaning that it is less likely to release oxygen than hemoglobin. Due to its higher affinity for oxygen atoms, myoglobin relates more oxygen to the body than hemoglobin does.

Myoglobin transports oxygen in muscle tissue, whereas hemoglobin transports oxygen in blood. In addition, hemoglobin transports more oxygen than myoglobin because hemoglobin has four myoglobin-like structures that can carry oxygen. Hope this helps!

Hi! As said in today's lecture, myoglobin is used for muscles and tissues and hemoglobin is reserved for blood. Hemoglobin has 4 myoglobin-like molecules which gives the opportunity to transport 4 oxygens (O2) at a time

Myoglobin is primarily found within the muscle tissue and transports 1 O2 while Hemoglobin is found in the blood and can be made up of 4 myoglobin and can therefore transfer 4 O2. However, they both share the similarity of having the TM Cation of Iron.

Hemoglobin is in blood, and myoglobin is in tissue ie. muscles etc. essentially myoglobin gets oxygen from hemoglobin, and hemoglobin gets oxygen when it passes through our lungs when we breathe in the oxygen, the local partial pressure of oxygen is the highest in the lungs which is why hemoglobin binds the oxygen there, and then it gets transported. Hemoglobin also has 4 myoglobin like molecules, which means that it could potentially carry 4 oxygen molecules if each one of the heme complex is saturated(bound to Oxygen)

Hemoglobin is located in the blood whereas myoglobin is located in the tissue, and they both serve functions of transporting oxygen. Myoglobin has a higher oxygen affinity than hemoglobin, leaving Hemoglobin the more desired compound to carry oxygen.

One of the questions in the review session was asking what carbon monoxide binds to, and the answer was myoglobin. Could we probably also say hemoglobin?

The huge difference between the two is that hemoglobin is 4 myoglobin complexes which 1 myoglobin is one heme structure. Therefore, hemoglobin can carry 4 oxygen because it has 4 heme structures. Whereas, the myoglobin can only carry one O2. Hence, there is 4 histones and 4 o2 on the hemoglobin. Therefore, its just a more complex structure.

Hemoglobin is able to transport 4 molecules of oxygen whereas myoglobin transfers one. This is because hemogloblin is made out of four myoglobins.

Hemoglobin is a transport protein that moves oxygen in the blood stream and is heterotetramic as well. Myoglobin is a monomeric protein found in muscle tissue and stores oxygen. Mainly, hemoglobin is an oxygen transporter and myoglobin is an oxygen acceptor.
