can someone please walk me through the steps of naming this coordination compound?

first, you want to identify the ligands and place them in alphabetical order. Then you add the prefixes depending on how many of the particular ligand is present. Next, you identify the metal and add its oxidation number in roman numerals in parenthesis. Last, you add any cations or anions that may be present.

You want to begin by naming the ligands in alphabetical order. Since you have ammonia and chloride, ammonia will come first. You need to specify the number of that ligand, so it would be triammine. You also need to specifiy the number of the chloride, so it would be trichloro. Finally you add the name of the transition metal with the Roman numeral. In this case, you have cobalt, and since NH3 is neutral, Cl is -1 and the overall coordination complex is neutral, cobalt must be 3+ to balance the negative charge from the chlorines.

So, your final answer is triammine trichloro cobalt (III).

Name the ligands first then the metal.
Name the ligands in alphabetical order.
NH3 is ammine, since there are three, it would be tri ammine,
Cl- is chlorido, since there are three, it would be tri chlorido,
Cobalt is just cobalt (insert roman numeral here),
to find the roman numeral, we have to look at the net charge, in this case it is neutral. Knowing that Cl is -1, and there are three, and that the NH3 are neutral, Cobalt must have an oxidation number of 3.

So the name would be,
tri ammine tri chlorido cobalt(III).

1. name ligands and metal, put the ligands in alphabetical order
2. put the appropriate prefixes for the ligand according to the number present
3. find the oxidation number of the metal and put it in parenthesis next to the metal
4. add any cations or anions that may exist
