types of biological examples

What were some of the biological examples of coordination compounds that were explained during the lectures? Thanks!

I believe he mentioned chromium, which assists insulin with blood sugar control. There was also iron, which can be found in hemoglobin and myoglobin, as well as cobalt, which is in vitamin B12. A few of the other elements discussed are critical for enzyme function, and those were nickel, copper, zinc, and manganese. Hope this helps!

One important example is cisplatin. Cis-diamine-dichloro-platinum(II) (shown below) can form a coordination compound with DNA, therefore stopping cell division.

Cisplatin has the chlorines on the same side of the molecule, allowing this bonding to occur. However, trans-diamine-dichloro-platinum(II) has chlorines on opposite sides and is unable to stop cell division.

Another important biological example is hemoglobin, which can bind with 4 O2 molecules and transport O2 in the blood.

From what I remember, one biological example that Dr. Lavelle discussed was Hemoglobin and Myoglobin which acted as oxygen distribution proteins throughout the human body by binding Oxygen and Iron.

Hi,

One example of a biological example is Cobalt, and its importance for Vitamin B12.
