Equilibrium Constants

Postby Michael Du 1E » Sat Mar 14, 2020 12:27 pm

Just for clarification, before we solve for the equilibrium constant, we have to make sure the chemical equation is balanced right? thank you

Yes, the equation must be balanced before you can calculate K

Yes the equation must be balanced because this can affect the concentration of products and reactants which would affect the value of K when calculated.

Yes, the coefficients in a chemical equation affect the K constant.

You should always make sure the equation is balanced before trying to do any calculations which require the correct stoichiometric ratios of reactants and products. Since the stoichiometric coefficients are crucial in things like exponents and fractions, and the equilibrium constant K is dependent on the correct ratio which can only happen if the exponents are correct, you can only solve for K using a balanced equation.

When the equilibrium constant K is larger than 10^3 does the reaction favor the products or the reactants?

Yes, definitely. Always check in case there's a typo or possibly a little "trick".

When it's larger it favors the products.

Yes make sure the equation is balanced so that you can be sure that the exponents are correct and the same as the stoichiometric coefficients.

Yes. Never calculate K with an unbalanced reaction.

Yes, you should balance the equation because it is important in determining the power of each coefficient when calculating K.

Hi,

Yes, the balanced chemical equation is required to find K.

Note, however, the stoichiometric coefficients must be to the lowest factor and must be whole numbers. For instance, don't put 0.5 as a coefficient or if the coefficients are 2 and 4, simplify to 1 and 2.

Hope this helps! :)

Yep! You need to balance the equation in order to correctly calculate K. If you do not have the correct stoichiometric coefficients, you will get an incorrect answer since you need to raise the concentrations to the power of their stoichiometric coefficient.

Yes because we need the correct stoichiometric coefficients in order to raise the concentration of our reactants and products to the correct power.

Yes the equation must be balanced before finding the equilibrium constant because you must use the stoichiometric coefficients in the equation for the equilibrium constant. The concentration of the reactants and products are raised to their coefficients in the equation.
