Clarification on Equilibrium Concept

Postby Jennifer1E » Sun Jul 23, 2017 9:10 pm

I am still having a difficult time understanding equilibrium conceptually. What does it mean for a reaction to be at equilibrium?

Equilibrium means the rates of the forward reaction and backward reaction are equal. In other words, the concentrations of reactants and products will not change when a system is at equilibrium.

Keep in mind, though, that this doesn't mean no reactants are being consumed or that no products are being made; it just means that the rates of reactant consumption and reactant formation are equal, such that the concentrations of reactants and products remains constant once equilibrium is reached.
