Quadratic formula

I understand that when you apply the quadratic formula, you get two values (one of which is typically negative). What is the concept behind the reason why you would NOT use the negative number to plug back into the equilibrium equation?

Because it is not possible to have a negative concentration.

I want to add that you also don't use the number that is less than the initial concentration because once again you might be getting a negative concentration.
