partial pressure

Postby Guadalupe T 1E » Sun Nov 26, 2017 2:20 pm

In lecture, the first example Lavelle went over for finding K was about a reaction that had gases but he went on to explain partial pressure. My question is, when asked for equilibrium for a reaction of gases is it in partial pressure or does it depend on what is being asked?

If all of the species given are gases then partial pressure can be used to calculate the equilibrium constant. If you are given Kp you would also use partial pressure. If you are given Kc you would use concentration.

When asked for equilibrium of a reaction with gases, you would only express the equilibrium constant in partial pressure (Kp) if those are the units you are asked for, it doesn't matter if you are given a gas. So it only depends on what is being asked- if you're given Kc of the gases then you would still answer in terms of concentration.

so are partial pressure and concentrations two different things?
