Concentration of P using the Quadratic Formula

Hello,

does anybody know why professor Lavelle said that one way to check today's problem was to plug the numbers in and see if it equals zero?

A quadratic equation by definition is one which can be expressed as Ax^2+Bx+C=0. The solution to these equations are values of x which when plugged into the equation make the equation shown true, and thus equal to zero.

Also keep in mind to discard the negative answer (of the two) you get because the concentration must always be a positive value.

When using the quadratic formula to find the "x" that you have created to find the equilibrium composition of a certain reaction, you must omit answers that are negative and those that are larger than the initial reactant concentrations or pressures. The answers cannot be negative because concentration or pressure cannot be negative, and answers cannot be larger than the initial reactant concentration/pressures because then the reaction would not be at equilibrium.
