### Kc and Kp

How do we know when to use Kc and Kp? During discussion our TA wanted us to do the homework based on Kc even though the state of the equation was g.

Dr. Lavelle said that we should do Kc because it is easier for us to solve based on concentration. It would be harder for us to solve Kp and covert. We should solve for Kp when it is asked of us in a question.

### Re: Kc and Kp

You use Kc or Kp based on the information that is given and what the question is asking for. For example, if you are given gases and their molar concentrations, you can use Kc. However, if the question requires you to calculate Kp, use the Ideal Gas Law to convert Kc to Kp.

You use Kp for gases and when pressure can be involved and Kc for aqueous solutions where mostly only concentration is concerned.

### Re: Kc and Kp

Use Kp when even partial pressures and Kc when given concentrations. You can convert using PV=nRT and can also convert between Kp and Kc but that is more complicated, but is necessary when you are given Kp and concentration values (or the other way around).

Use the one your given, don't use the one your not given.
