Calculating Q

Postby kanikubari » Sun Jan 13, 2019 7:17 pm

I don't know if this has been asked already but when finding Q, how do you know when to put the reactant on top of the fraction or the product?

When calculating both Q or R you put the products over the reactants.

We calculate Q the exact same way we calcuate Kc or Kp, that is
Kc= [products]^a/[reactants]^b
Kp= (P products)^a / (P reactants)^b
The products are always in the numerator.

Okay, thanks guys! It confused me on problems like 5.1.9.

Calculating Q and K are the same. Q is just when the equation is not at equilibrium so you compare that value to K in order to figure out which direction the reaction is going. To calculate Q or K you need to do products over reactants.

When calculating both Q and K we put the products over the reactants, so it is the same as K.

Q is calculated the same way as K, so you will always have products over reactants

when calculating either K or Q, you always have to put [products]/[reactants]
