Solids and Liquids in Equilibrium

Postby Rogelio Bazan 1D » Sun Jan 13, 2019 11:09 pm

I know that Dr. Lavelle stated that both Solids and Liquids are excluded during equilibrium calculations as there is an excess of both the solids in the liquids so we exclude them during calculations. I am still confused with subjects in the reaction that is in an aqueous state do we exclude these as well?

Thank you.

I believe aqueous species can be included, since they are technically neither solid nor liquid.

Hello

What is included in the calculation of K/Kc/Kp are Gases and Aqueous compounds.
What are NOT included in the calculations of K are Solids and Liquids, for the same reasons you stated in the question.

Keep in mind that we do not just ignore them. They have a value of [1]. This means that if all products are solids, do not just write K = [Reactant 1] [Reactant 2], rather, the correct expression for K would be K = 1/[reactant 1][reactant 2].

Hope this helps :)
